Retrieval practice, or the testing effect, is the finding that trying to recall something strengthens memory more than reviewing it again. In Roediger and Karpicke's experiments, re-reading won on a test five minutes later, but on delayed tests days and a week out, the people who had been tested remembered substantially more.
